ACADEMY OF MARTIAL ARTS:

Self Defense see schedule

Beginner Level

First of all it is important to understand that all of our arts: Tai Chi, Ba Gua, Kung Fu and the Kids Kung Fu encompass self defense training at least to some degree.

At the beginner's level the concentration is on self-defense, not fighting. Self defense is based on dealing with specific attacks until the student gains confidence and spontanaeity. We start with "time" techniques which are the kind of attack where you have a moment to assess the situation and then respond. From this we move to...

Intermediate Level

..."reaction" techniques such as attacks which require an immediate response. By now the student will have developed the basic skills to counter attacks and extricate the student from the danger zone. We also introduce the basics of grappling movements and some simple control actions. Special methods like Push Hands, Sticky Hands and Rolling Arms are used to increase student sensitivity and reaction time.

Advanced Level

At the Advanced level attack can be either "time" or "response" or any combination. We also introduce situations where you might be attacked by more than one person. In addition we start to work on techniques against weapons attacks. Sparring now encompasses a mixture of grappling and strikings. Nerve attacks are also shown.
