The Academy of Martial Arts: Santa Cruz

We just can't help it, we're different. We are what you might call the opposite of the modern martial arts school. It's like our phone ad says, "Not all schools are alike". To study with us you will have to put aside what you probably think is typical to all martial arts schools . . . . . . .

  • We don't teach children. Frankly most kids can't understand the material we teach at the level we teach it. Our students are not just adults, many of them are mature, established people with ages ranging from 20 - 65.
  • We don't teach mixed martial arts. To say we don't teach whatever's hot this week would be an understatement. Some of the styles we practice have unbroken histories of over 1000 years.
  • We don't make money from charging you for "hidden costs". Other than moderate fees of less than a hundred a month, we don't charge for belt tests (because we don't have any), or ranks, or special mat fees or any other "special" costs. We teach, you practice, that's about it.
  • We have small classes. You won't be tripping over someone or, for that matter, paired up with a first day student with a wild look in his eye. Mature instructors with long time experience supervise every aspect of our teaching.
  • We are not a disguised aerobics class. Exercise is fun and healthy, we just object to so much misleading hype where the work out has no resemblance whatsoever to martial practice.
  • We teach in a way you have to think. This is an adult school for mature people interesting in authentic, traditional martial practice with its unique blend of physical skills and intellectual challenges. If you don't think martial practice has intellectual challenges then, sorry, but you've never studied true martial arts...
  • We're not the new thing on the block. We are Santa Cruz County's oldest Kung Fu school...

What do we teach? Well for starters we have classes in Tai Chi, Bagua (an incredible art from China based on constant change), QiGong (the equivalent of Chinese style Yoga and meditation combined).

We offer classes to every level of martial artists from the beginner to people with decades of experience. Recognized in China, we are an authentic Kung Fu hall and teach a traditional style with a classical approach.

Training includes flexibility, strength and coordination drills along with more sophisticated studies such as Chi Kung and self massage. Each class encompasses basics, postural work and self defense. We train each individual from a unique standpoint with concern for his or her understanding of the cultural as well as physical information inherent in martial arts.

How to start:

Step 1. Call us up.

Step 2. Come to a meeting. We're really serious about martial arts and helping students. We INTERVIEW each and every potential student before teaching. We will not sign up everyone who walks in the door because the arts are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. Not every art meets everyone's needs. The interview is FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.

Step 3. Start your introductory lessons. Take a FREE lesson see if we have a "match" between school and student. If you don't feel it's right, no pressure. And, by the same token, we might suggest you try another teacher or another method.

Step 4. Become a student and join a tradition that's been going for 1500 years!
