The ACADEMY OF MARTIAL ARTS

Interested in giving Kung Fu a try? We would love you to but we are restructuring our curriculum and emphasizing traditional methods even more (traditionally Kung Fu school were somewhat selective about student enrollment). At present we are only offering a new (ancient) way to try out our style without making any long term commitment. If you would like to learn about our new SEMINAR program...

The Academy of Martial Arts has been offering instruction in the Santa Cruz area for over twenty years. It shares a curriculum in Kung Fu, Self Defense, Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, Qigong and other disciplines related to Chinese martial arts.

Welcome to a completely different martial arts school:

  • A powerful ancient art (over 1000 years old)
  • A great work out.
  • Self Defense in a special noncompetitive setting
  • We are also a traditional school teaching formally and producing instructors as well as students.
  • No Belts
  • No Competition .

KUNG FU: An ancient system over 1000 years old that is a wonderful combination of workout, self defense, art form and just plain fun. In general our style of Kung Fu, which is named after the Shaolin Temple, is appropriate for anyone from 14 to 40. Classes emphasize a rounded approach to stretching, strengthening, self protection with hands on experience and a beautiful art form. Our Kung Fu is authentic and well respected with mature teachers and no emphasis on competition or sports martial training.

TAI CHI has become a famous exercise. What many people don't know is that it is a great martial practice as well. We have a strong Tai Chi department which teaches a variety of skills including Yang Solo Form, Chen Lao Jia, Yang San Shou, 12 Method Tai Chi Sword, Push Hands and Chi Kung.

CHI KUNG: This is a healing practice that uses posture, relaxation and breathing. We have a drop-in class at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays if you want to give it a try. Other than that Chi Kung practice is included with all the above training.

For those who are pretty familiar with martial arts we also teach - within the above sections - such diverse arts as Plum Blossom Fist, Praying Mantis, Jiao Men (Muslim style) and many other disciplines from China rarely seen in the West.

Background information about our head instructor.

Directions: Our studio is on Soquel Drive right after it crosses Highway One. Coming along the freeway from Santa Cruz direction, take the Soquel exit then come around onto Soquel Drive toward Soquel Village. We're just over the freeway and three doors down: right across from Dominican hospital. We don't have open observation but people are encouraged to call for an appointment where we set instructor time aside to talk with prospective students.
