To Class or Not to Class

Hello Students!

Environmental circumstances (heat, air quality and—potentially—rain) are making it difficult for us to responsibly hold classes, making occasional cancellations possible. We want to make it as simple as possible for you to know if class will be held on any particular day, so just check below for that information.

Individual Dates:

Saturday, March 6. Class, yes!

Saturday, February 20. Yes, class (but…) At the risk of being repetitive, light showers forecast early, but should clear by class time. See you soon!

Saturday, February 13. Yes, class (but…) Light showers may or may not materialize and they may or may not be in the morning. Unless there is ongoing heavy rainfall, we will be there to teach. Dress appropriately, just in case! We will update here if things change.

Please note that we are back to our original Pandemic Schedule:
Shaolin: 10-11
Bagua: 11 – 12
Tai Chi: 12 – 1

Saturday, February 6. Yes, class!!

Saturday, November 7  See you in Class!

Thursday, November 5 Class is happening today, but at a NEW TIME: 4:00 – 5:00 pm (Instructors may stay until 5:30 for additional training).

Saturday, October 31  Class on Saturday, bright and sunny. See you there.

Thursday, October 29 Class tonight at the regular time. See you there.

Saturday, October 24  Class is a happening thing! See you then.

Thursday, October 22. Yep! CLASS IS ON!
10/21/2020, 4:16 PM As always, we will monitor and if something comes up, we’ll let you know. But at this point, the Instructor’s class at 4:30 and the regular class from 5 – 6 is on.

Saturday, October 17  CLASS, LOOKING GOOD.
10/16/2020, 4:25 PM We’re in a good pattern here, looks fine for class tomorrow. Weather report even says it will be much cooler. If anything changes, will update—otherwise, see you in class.

Thursday, October 15 CLASS, YEAH!
10/14/2020, 9:12:25 PM Everything looks good for class on Thursday evening at 5:00 (instructors at 4:30). I’ll post on Thursday afternoon, but I don’t expect anything to change.

Saturday, October 10  CLASS IS HAPPENING!
10/10/2020, 7:50:37 AM  With an AQI reading of 4, we happily announce class is meeting today!

10/09/2020, 9:19 PM Still looking GREEN for tomorrow. Will update final determination around 8:30, but assume all is good unless things take a marked turn for the worse overnight.

10/09/2020, 1:54 PM  Just love it when I check the AQI map and everything in our area is GREEN. Of course, things change and we’ll keep up the monitoring, but like what we are seeing right now with respect to Saturday class: nice clean air and good weather for a hearty workout.

As a side note, Thursday’s first class went well (ok, our sound man wasn’t there so we lose a couple of points for that). But it was nice to see so many familiar faces at our new class time.

Thursday, October 8:  Class is happening!

10/08/2020, 3:13:24 PM Looks good for class this evening! We’ll see you all there!

10/08/2020, 10:02:55 AM This morning’s check sees a small rise in the AQI numbers (in the wrong direction) but using the new site above, numbers are still in the 70’s so, safe enough (at this point) to meet. We will continue to keep an eye on this, and will report final determination around 3:30 pm this afternoon.

For those curious about our switch in site monitoring, we were getting disparate results from the two or three we checked; actually reports results, and even those numbers were different on the two sites. I wrote to, and this was their response:

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for writing. We are using the Purple Air data on our site, but first we correct the bias in the Purple Air data. Those sensors tend to read high. You can read about the correction equation we apply in the FAQs on the map (use the question mark icon in the upper right of the Fire and Smoke map to find the FAQs) if you want to know the details. But I think you are good using the Fire and Smoke map, with its AirNow monitors and the sensors to give you more data. Click on any monitor or sensor to see more data.

10/07/20209:42:14 AM Dare we say it? Everything at this moment looks good for class on Thursday, 5:00 pm. Will update on Thursday afternoon. Hope to see you all there!

10/07/2020, 10:10:41 PM It’s still looking good for class Thursday evening at 5:00 pm. Also, we have started to use what appears to be a more nuanced and accurate reporting of air quality here:

Saturday, October 3: Cancelled
10/03/2020, 8:35:56 AM Unfortunately, AQI is over 100 at many sensors around the studio, and steadily climbing. Sadly, Class Will Be Cancelled For Today due to unhealthy conditions for outside activity.

2020-10-03, 7:40:53 AM AQI is averaging in the high 80’s; still keeping an eye on it for classes today. Will report between 8:30 – 8:45 for final determination.

10/02/2020, 7:10:35 PM AQI appears to be falling: ~7:00 pm friday it is 97. Still monitoring it for class tomorrow. We will continue to monitor Check back Saturday morning at 8:30 am for final determination.

For Air Quality Index Numbers, we are using
Our decision is:

If AQI is 100 or above, no class for that day
If AQI is below 100, we will hold class.

The regular schedule for classes (when held):

Shaolin/Long Fist: 10:00 – 11:00

Bagua: 11:15 – 12:15

Tai Chi: 12:30 – 1:30

Instructors Only: 4:30 – 5:00

All styles: 5:00 – 6:00
